Letters to family, 1846-1859.

This series contains three letters written by George M. Hanson and one letter by William P. Hanson, addressed to various relatives. In George's first letter he writes to Thomas Hanson about his decision to leave Charleston, Illinois, for the "Far West." William's sole letter, addressed to his cousin Thomas Apperson, describes his life since arriving in Marysville, California, including detailed descriptions about hunting conditions. George's second letter, written to Dr. John and Sidney Apperson (whom he addresses as "Dear Brother and Sister"), describes the climate and geography of California and describes the construction and costs of a bridge that he is building. George's final letter to John Apperson references the social and political atmosphere in California, as well as detailing in some length the costs and benefits of raising honey bees. All of the letters focus heavily on personal news about family members and acquaintances. Includes typed transcriptions of three of the letters.

4 letters photocopies.
